Let us try a quick test:
Cocaine. Heroin. Marijuana. Ecstasy. Alcohol.
Which one is the most dangerous drug?
Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new study.
British experts evaluated substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole.
Researchers analyzed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body, in addition to other criteria like environmental damage caused by the drug, its role in breaking up families and its economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison.
Heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, or crystal meth, were the most lethal to individuals. When considering their wider social effects, alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the deadliest. But overall, alcohol outranked all other substances, followed by heroin and crack cocaine. Marijuana, ecstasy and LSD scored far lower.
The study was paid for by Britain's Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and was published online in the medical journal, Lancet.
Experts said alcohol scored so high because it is so widely used and has devastating consequences not only for drinkers but for those around them.
When drunk in excess, alcohol damages nearly all organ systems. It is also connected to higher death rates and is involved in a greater percentage of crime than most other drugs, including heroin.
Nick was a young man that faced the temptation to consume alcohol. While in a higher institution of learning, he had the liberty to indulge in alcohol or to abstain.
According to Nick, "It was during my time there that I saw the destructive influence of alcohol in a number of my friends. One friend fell off the roof of a multi-storey car park after a drunken night out and a run-in with a police. He died a few weeks later. A classmate ended up pregnant after a night partying with too much to drink. To her credit, she courageously rejected the recommendations of her friends to abort the baby, whose father was a convicted criminal, but the trajectory of her life was irrevocably changed. Another friend, who I regarded as a particularly sensible and conscientious student, foolishly drove home after one too many to drink. He killed a girl and ended up in jail. It scared me. If someone like him could do something like that, what could I be capable of?"
The Word of God says, Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Proverbs 20:1
A lot of people deliberately seek to justify drunkenness by claiming that in the Bible, Jesus turned water into wine. But, was it an alcoholic wine? Or was it grape juice like the non-alcoholic wines that we have in the market today?
The Greek word used for wine in Jn. 2 at the wedding in Cana of Galilee is "oinos" which refers to grape juice. This is different from "wine" in Acts 2: 13, Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. In this verse, the Greek word for wine is "gleukos", which is fermented intoxicating wine. People thought the disciples were drunk when they heard them speaking in different tongues on the day of Pentecost.
"Use a little wine for your stomach's sake" in 1 Tim. 5: 23 is also "oinos", that is, grape juice.
Alcohol will break down the mental barrier of your brain and cause you to do and say things that you will regret later. A person under the influence of alcohol is no longer in control of himself.
God wants you to be sober in life. Why? "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" 1 Peter 5:8
The enemy of your soul wants you to be intoxicated to make it easy for him to destroy you. Resist the temptation to consume alcohol. It has never helped anybody; it will not help you.
Soberly consider what will happen when your time on earth is over and accept Jesus Christ for the salvation of your soul.
