Repentance: What Does it Mean?

Repentance: What Does it Mean?

"Repent" is the combination of two Latin words, "re" and "pent".
"Re" means—again.
"Pent" means—think

In the Greek language, the word for repentance is "metanoia". It is also a combination of two words, "meta" meaning 'change', and "noia" meaning "mind".

So, whether in the Latin or in the Greek language, to repent means, "think again", "change your mind".

Sin, rebellion, and all forms of vices originate in the mind. The way you think is the way you live.
Since you were a child, your family, your society, your culture and the world, have combined to program the way that your mind works. There are things that you do or say automatically, because it is acceptable in your society; while some things you will never do, because they are socially unacceptable.

The way the kingdom of the world thinks is totally opposed to the way the kingdom of God does. In the world, success is measured by how much money and wealth a man is able to amass and by how many people serve him. That is why your life is focused on becoming rich.

In the kingdom of God, success is measured by how many people you serve and how willing you are to give what you have rather than hoard for yourself.
In the world, to tell a lie, (you can call it an excuse) is acceptable, but it is not acceptable in the kingdom of God. In fact, no liar will enter the kingdom of God.
To have a boy friend or girl friend is acceptable in the world; but not in the kingdom of God, except there are clear indications that is the person God wants you to marry and it is time.

To consume alcohol is perfectly legal in the world; it is illegal in the kingdom of God.
To repent therefore, means that you realize the sinful patterns of the kingdom of the world that it is evil in the sight of God. You confess and forsake your sins and now commence to change the way that you think so that you can change your actions.
If you do not change your mind, you cannot change your actions. No matter how forcefully a pastor preaches against sin, if you do not see anything wrong with the sin, you will not forsake it.

Therefore, when Jesus came, the gospel He preached was the gospel of repentance from sin. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matthew 4:17

The Lord is saying, "change the way you used to think, because another kingdom is coming to replace this sinful kingdom of the world."
If you continue to think like they do in the world, you will not be a partaker in the kingdom of God, when it is established.

It is someone who has truly repented that will see adultery, stealing, lies, pride, malice, un-forgiveness, etc as sin.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

To repent means to renew your mind. Sin is evil; do not consider it positively. Sin is the cord that Satan uses to drag people to eternal destruction in hell fire. If you repent today, you will live in the glorious liberty of the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
