For the Lord will not cast off for ever: But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies (Lam. 3:31-32).

 

The worst form of slavery is to be enslaved on one's own land. The distressing slavery imposed on Nigerians is exemplified by the post below, of the situation in Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State. It should be noted that Kajuru LGA is not unique in this experience. It is now the common situation in many parts of northern Nigeria. Other categories of Nigerians experience slavery in various forms. The emerging truth is that Nigerians are becoming enslaved on their ancestral lands; killed or kidnapped at will, without consequence to the assailants.

 

The short report below, from Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State was posted via WhatsApp by Bro. R. B. (Some minor editing has been done for brevity and clarity.)

 

“This is … someone who lives in a community that has entered into an agreement with Fulani kidnappers following repeated attacks. The community is now in its third year, living alongside bandits. It took him a week to leave his community, which I will not name, but it's in Kajuru LGA, Kaduna State. The man is married with 5 children, but his wife doesn't belong to him since the agreement was entered into. The kidnappers sleep with her whenever they feel the urge, sometimes while the children watch. If he protests, he will be shot. The same thing happens to all the women in the village. If a kidnapper leaves a blanket in front of your house or drops a stick, it's a sign that he will sleep in your house with your wife or daughter that day, while you sleep outside. 

This man, like other families, can't leave the village now, though some have managed to. If you are caught, you are shot. If you are seen walking with a bag, you are searched. They are allowed to farm, but one quarter of the harvest goes to the bandits. They aren't allowed to own a phone, though a few have found a way around it. If you are caught, you are shot.

They aren't allowed to own a machete; only hoes and diggers are permitted for farming. They can visit villages that have also entered into an agreement with the bandits. If they want to buy anything from a village that hasn't entered into an agreement, it’s their wives who are allowed to go. If the wives don’t return, the husbands and children will be shot. If the men want to go to an outside market to buy anything or sell grain, their wives and children stay behind. 

Youths in the community are forced to accompany the bandits to steal or kidnap. They are forced to ride the motorcycle while the bandits sit behind with guns. If you refuse to go, you are shot. 

They can't hold any church service on Sunday, unless the bandits are not around. Schools in those communities do not function because teachers have abandoned them. Likewise, Power Holding Company (for electricity) does not function.  Everything is controlled by the kidnappers. Sometimes they pick people from the community and shoot them to show what will happen to anyone who disobeys them. This is just a summary of the chilling things this man said. There are more than 20 communities in Kajuru LGA, about 30 in Kachia LGA, and dozens in Chikun LGA that have entered into such agreements with these kidnappers and are living under harsh conditions. Though the conditions vary, most have no freedom at all.” Bro. R. B.

 

It is no use for Christians to lament, because they were adequately warned. Sadly, the Church did not heed the warning. To worsen matters, when some arose in the Church to resist the invasion of the Islamists, they were opposed by some Church leaders. This prayer call is an attempt to awaken Christians to the present dangers, because in many quarters, particularly amongst Church leaders, the impression is that there is no cause for alarm. If care is not taken, the situation in those states in the North West might spread all over the country, just like the terrorism which started in Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, and Kano states in July 2009. Some of the factors that contributed to the explosion of terrorism and the gradual enslavement of the indigenous ethnic nationalities in Nigeria shall be highlighted below. Hopefully, Christians will take heed to the dangers.

 

The first factor responsible for the enslavement of the indigenous ethnic nationalities in Nigeria on their land is “the supremacist ideology” of the Fulanis. This ideology is based on the Risala of 1903. Risala is a Fulani ideological code calling for action to remember the British defeat suffered by the Sultanate on 20-21 March 1903, resist British suzerainty, or that of other ethnic groups, and deepen an era of Fulani rule. It is an unwritten policy of the Fulanis, passed from generation to generation. The goal is to have Nigeria as an Islamic society under Fulani leadership. If this cannot be achieved peacefully, then by war. While the herdsmen, insurgents, and Boko Haram are mere foot soldiers, there is an array of politicians, intellectuals, business magnates, and bureaucrats of the Fulani ethnic stock who deploy their official status and positions to advance the Risala of 1903. This is the fundamental problem in Nigeria.

 

The leader of the Fulanis, who also doubles as the leader of Islam in Nigeria, makes every effort to present himself as a statesman. Bearing in mind that all the Fulani herdsmen and other categories of terrorists are under his authority, the claim to statesmanship is perverse. Ironically, it is Church leaders who happily accord him recognition as statesman while his actions/inactions point to that of a predator. If the supremacist ideology of the Fulani is not dismantled, Nigeria will not have peace. The first step to commence breaking the hold of the Fulani is another constitution in place of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

 

The second factor responsible for the dismal situation of Nigeria is the All Progressives Congress (APC) political party. One of the greatest disservices of some notable Church leaders and Christian elites is the support they gave to the APC in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 elections. It is hoped that they would not repeat the folly in 2027.

 

According to Abubakar Kawu Baraje, a former leader in the APC, during his 70th birthday at Ilorin, APC brought Fulani militia from Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Niger, and Chad into Nigeria to help the party win the 2015 elections. After public uproar, Baraje denied making the statement and claimed that it was a smear campaign. In 2016, former governor El Rufai of Kaduna State, another APC chieftain, admitted that his government paid compensation to Fulanis to stop killing in Kaduna State. 

 

The policies of the APC, such as Open Visa Policy, tepid prosecution of terrorists, as well as the reintegration of terrorists as “repentant terrorists” have been criticized as state endorsement of terrorism. Under the APC, terrorism has flourished and expanded in Nigeria. 

 

The third factor is the lukewarm attitude of key Church leaders to the plight of Christians under the attack of terrorists. Not a few Christians have expressed dissatisfaction with how the apex Christian body has engaged the government and responded to the threat. Leaders of the apex body of the Church are perceived as romancing with the Islamists and with a government that apparently endorses terrorists. In 2013, God distinctly said that “the Nigerian Church is an irresponsible Church.” That lukewarm response has fuelled allegations of compromise within the Church.

 

It is expedient that the Church reorganize its leadership structure and make it virile to engage the threat posed against Christians in Nigeria. The Church is not required to acquire arms and ammunitions but to speak out. Certain words must be proclaimed into the Nigerian space by Church leaders before the 2027 elections. There are declarations that the Church must make to the government and to Nigerians. If those words are not spoken, it might be difficult to change the status quo in Nigeria. The Church fights with words, and the spoken word is the most powerful force in the universe. "But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach" (Rom. 10:8). The Church must hurriedly cultivate leadership that will say what must be said before the end of 2026.

 

The fourth factor is the judiciary. Globally, the judiciary is considered the last hope of the common person. In Nigeria, there are allegations that the judiciary is the last hope of corrupt politicians. Such perception is not healthy, and the controversial judgments emanating from the courts have not helped matters. Not a few Nigerians hold the judiciary responsible for the tragedy of the 2023 election and its consequences on the country. The judiciary must ensure that it is above reproach and should restore its integrity. The judiciary must not forget that “Abuja Declarations 1989”, has marked the Common Law system in Nigeria for eradication, to be replaced with the Sharia. The judiciary should not unwittingly support and strengthen those who have marked it for elimination.

 

Because of time and space, the last factor to be mentioned is the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Well informed Nigerians insist that the 1999 Constitution is not a “peoples constitution”. It was neither negotiated nor produced by Nigerians. There are ongoing advocacies urging Nigeria to revert to the 1963 Republican constitution which was negotiated by the founding fathers of the country. The 1999 Constitution concentrates all power at the centre while the federating units are rendered comatose. One thing is clear, a new constitution is indispensable to resolving the crises facing Nigeria. Every citizen must agitate for a new constitution before the 2027 elections. It can easily be done since the 1963 constitution was not abrogated, but “suspended”. The “suspension” can easily be lifted, and with minor amendments to the number of regions, the country can return to regional autonomy.

 

This prayer call shall end the way it started. “The worst form of slavery is for people to be enslaved on their own land.” This is the reality of what is confronting the autochthonous ethnic nationalities of Nigeria. The solution to this threat is in the Church. Christians must prevail on their Church leaders to reorganize the Church to resist the agenda of the Islamists. There is still time to do so. Pray that God’s mercies shall prevail on behalf of Nigerians.

 

Confess the sins of Nigeria Christians and plead for forgiveness and deliverance for the country.

 

Cancel every ancient conspiracy to enslave the indigenous ethnic nationalities of Nigeria, and decree that it shall not stand.

 

Pray that God shall raise a leader for the Nigeria Church who shall speak the words of deliverance to set the Church and the country free.

 

Pray that God shall dismantle the unrighteous 1999 Constitution (as amended) and replace it with a constitution that shall benefit Nigeria.

 

Pray that every manipulation of the All Progressives Congress to perpetuate itself in power against the will of Nigerians shall not come to pass.

 

Pray that God shall speedily execute His judgment on wickedness and evil in Nigeria, to teach the country righteousness.
